If I didn't read the book beforehand, I would've rated this even lower. It's a tough adaptation but they tried. If you're gonna toss out half the book, might as well just keep the core relationship and not follow the plot order of the book. A better adaptation would have mentioned how creepy it is for a 40 year old to be hanging out with little girls in meadows.
