I somehow hadn't seen Ponyo, which is about a baby goldfish (?) and her father's fear of losing her to the human world. It's a clear analogue for parenthood and adolescence - or even just that transition from a baby to a little person with thoughts and feelings of their own. This was the first time for me. Travolta is magneeeeeetic, you can see why he become a star right here. The dancing is so fun, the music is incredibly energetic and the story is surprisingly resonant. The dark turn towards the end is well handled.
I think it ends way too abruptly but I suppose it can't go on forever. So glad I watched this!
