The kind of throwback crime flick we should be praising instead of the empty wankfests mired in nostalgia that Refn and the like produce. A well told yarn that really balances a tone with the best of them. Life is gonna be life until the darkness rolls in. And when it does, it is unflinching. Shocking how mean it's willing to get. Hawkes is amazing, my kingdom for a Collins/Forster buddy movie. A low key gem that should be talked about with more reverence. May not be Zahler level great, but it's closer than anyone would like to admit.
One of the best king adaptations ever. Emotionally draining and empowering all at once. Tense as shit. Just a pitch perfection adaption that plays as a female oriented play on misery. Men are oppressors but a little light will only show that their imposing figures is just a shadow. Wonderful.
