The Living Dead at Manchester Morgue

    This is so, so good.

Everything works so well here. The score and sound design complement one another brilliantly. The ghastly moans and gasps of the undead are very unsettling. They’re used to precise effect, alerting us to the presence of the living dead before showing any onscreen - if any are shown at all.

The commentary on ecological disaster is terrific, and it’s aided by some more interesting depictions of authority figures and their inherent flaws.

    Highly, highly recommended.

It’s okay. It’s very long, kinda boring at times, but the big battle is pretty fun.

    It Chapter Two

It Chapter Two is a fun, if mixed, sequel. It improves on its characters in its pitch-perfect casting, and the performances are highly commendable. Bill Hader and James Ransone are both excellent as Richie and Eddie, respectively. Hader adds a much-needed depth to the otherwise purely comically-oriented Richie. The film’s pacing is mostly very good, and is helped by the performances. The digital effects grow tiresome, but they don’t quite take away the power of Skarsgard’s portrayal of the dancing clown. Despite flaws, this is certainly worth seeing. Recommended.

    The Monster of Piedras Blancas

I actually got a lot more out of this film than I thought I would.

A lonely lighthouse keeper has been secretly feeding an amphibious monster near the town of Piedras Blancas. When the lighthouse keeper misses a feeding, the beast heads to the town and racks up a startling body count.

Most striking here is the level of onscreen gore; the monster’s first “proper” appearance has him brandishing a severed head. Also admirable is the (sadly underdeveloped) plot point…
