Johnny Barrett’s review published on Letterboxd:
Another excellent political comedy from the creator of The Thick Of It, though definitely a lot more realistic and dark than his other works. This is mainly due to a healthy amount of historical accuracy playing into the story, and it's pretty damn hard to keep the Stalinist purges and his subsequent death lighthearted. The writing is top-tier as to be expected, as well as brilliant casting. Buschemi easily stole the movie by just being himself, but everyone else is pulling both their comedic and dramatic weight (with Jason Issacs as a cockney Russian general being the second big highlight). The directing is also a huge step up, doing away with most of the naturalistic shaky cam of the director's early work to a clean and elegant style. A really overlooked comedy and something that everyone needs to give a shot, it was really fun.
