    A young witch moves to the big city and learns to cope with life on her own. Utterly charming. 

    DVD menu screen report: Like the other Disney releases of Studio Ghibli films, a still with three frames that show a series of clips from the film backed with different excerpts from the score. Elegantly done. B+

    Only after watching this did I discover that Alita: Battle Angel was James Cameron’s “next film” for nearly 20 years and that it was only an attempt to bring down the ballooning budget that Robert Rodriguez was brought in to ultimately direct the script that Cameron co-wrote based on a manga. The world building and action is great here, but it’s all a bit familiar after the glut of YA dystopia adaptations that were all the rage a few years…

    I had to pause the film about 45 minutes in and realized that I had only watched backstory. Virtually nothing had happened to drive the story. Surely, it would get to a story soon. It only sort of did. A few thoughts:

    • Is having a racist prison guard, who is somehow in charge of all our heroes, supposed to distract us from the fact that most of the characters are racial stereotypes?
    • Two of the four female characters…

    Having watched The Weinstein Company US dub of the film, it is entirely possible that their attempts to Americanize the film ruined anything it may have been going for it. Perhaps, there are moments that play truer in Argentina, a country where soccer, um, football, has a greater cultural impact. Perhaps the supposedly adorable Foosball players come to life play as something more than broad stereotypes. Perhaps, the odd structure and pure lack of consequence of those Foosball characters add…
