At first the film felt like it could be pretty mundane but as it went on it dove into the themes I was hoping they’d get into.
Diop’s voice overs were powerful, almost too powerful as they did not reflect what was being shown; with the exception of one pivotal scene. My favorite sequence had to be when Monsieur is trying to give Diouana’s Mamma her luggage and 20,000 francs but is followed by a small boy wearing Diouana’s mask. I saw this as her spirit haunting him for silently watching his Madame bully her.
This film was a great example of someone wanting something really bad and realizing that it’s not what it seemed.
