Rio, Zona Norte ★★★★★

Rio Zona Norte is my favorite Nelson Pereira dos Santos film, despite it often getting treated as relative minor because it is much more written and obvious melodramatic than Rio 40 Graus, and it probably has Grande Otelo's best performance and I think Grande Otelo should be very high on the list of Brazil's cultural treasures. And then there's that moment late in the film after Grande Otelo's samba composer has gone through enough indiginity, poverty, violence and one form or other of exploitation for the previous hour when he manages to get a one on one meeting with popular singer Angela Maria and start to sing her his latest samba and she joins in and his expression of joy is the greatest moment in all Brazilian movies.
