Hidden gem alert.
I have no idea how well known AN AVERAGE LITTLE MAN is in Italy. Ten years ago, it was listed as one of the "100 Italian Films to be Saved" by the Venice Film Festival. so it must have some importance. One thing is for sure, this film needs to be discovered by more people outside of the country.
The less you know about AN AVERAGE LITTLE MAN going in, the better. If you aren't familiar with Alberto Sordi, he was known as a comedic actor through most of his lengthy career. I haven't seen the majority of his work, but he was simply excellent in the dark comedy MAFIOSO, which was re-released by Criterion.
This film is difficult to describe. It could be called a dark comedy, tragicomedy or a dramedy.
But I'm calling it a nihilistic comedy. And an astounding one at that.
