Almost all camerawork in this one seemed to be done from handhelds, making the slow shaky-cam effect almost nauseating. Use of 9/11 footage as disaster effect for the film is quite tasteless. Michael Ironside is a bit of a redeeming factor playing a weak-willed scientist who is intent on seeing is project succeed even if it means disaster. Yet with much of this film taking place in dark tunnels, and there not even really being a volcano, and the climax of this film being pretty much non-existent this one really is a let down.

Wow, this thing is PUTRID. The camera operator will NOT STOP MOVING, EVER. Not one shot is stable. Every shot swoops and sways and zooms at all times, to the point where when the ground is actually supposed to be shaking it's impossible to differentiate those scenes from any other.
Also, the filmmakers use 9/11 footage as stock disaster footage, so fuck this thing right in the ear.
A character does say "Welcome to the party" though, a line I want in every movie ever, hence the generous half-star rating.
adding this to the list of costas movies that were actually not as bad as i was expecting them to be. i WISH the movie poster was accurate, but [spoilers] nyc sadly does not get pompeii'd. they did use 9/11 footage tho, which is batshit insane to me because this was only 5 years after it happened did they think nobody would notice????? lmfao???? there was also a killer, which i think should be in every disaster movie to make them funnier. imagine finding out there's an active volcano under new york and also having to deal with some guy who wants you dead so bad
also costas's arms in that stupid denim vest made me feel like a rabid dog but we dont have to talk about that
Not a "good" movie by any stretch of the imagination, but if you are a fan of terrible disaster movies (like I am) then you will love it. It has all the overacting, ridiculous plot devices, and terrible effects you could hope for. And like any good bad disaster movie, it rips off a whole lot of the "science" and plot from big-budget disaster movies. What more could you ask for?
what’s wrong with me that I watched this movie?? Is it enough that it stars Costas with a basically perfect haircut??
whole extra star for genuinely ending with a 12 month calendar of hot tunnel diggers. made me laugh and almost made up for the headache the rest of the movie gave me
At least the film wasn't shy about killing people. Some kills were far better than others though. Also I was amused by the daughter who wanted to follow in her father's footsteps working under NYC, acting like a tough guy. That crew in general was pretty amusing throughout.
Unfortunately the main characters and the script in general took itself way too seriously. I mean, a villain character in a natural disaster movie... why? The volcano is the opponent, that's all these films need. Characters working to survive against nature. The structure for the film should have been easy. Rip off Volcano (1997). And while the end does a bit technically, the essence of the film was way off.
My vote, stay clear of this 👎.
Not sure about whether the science checks out here but I actually really enjoyed this one!! Absolute lot of rubbish but you know what, that's exactly what I was wanting!!
Michael Ironside is a shady scientist who is conducting geothermal energy experiments and winds up hitting a magma chamber under New York. A bunch of sandhogs try to help.
Eh... it's a Syfy Channel movie, so it is what it is. It's always fun to see Michael Ironside but he was kind of hammy in this. Weird to see Costas Mandylor is something other than a "Saw" film. A bit more gore in the beginning of the movie which was kind of awesome because I wasn't expecting it. Otherwise, its overly chatty and the CGI lava bursting out the sewers looked as realistic as the birds in "Birdemic: Shock and Terror".
