Ford: Muž a stroj, Ford: un uomo, un impero
I'm sure those behind this picture thought they were making an epic biopic, but it borders on self-parody. Cliff Robertson portrays the innovative industrialist who often appears as naive, and near infantile, as he is frequently outmaneuvered by rivals, and then suddenly, he'll appear ingenious, pioneering the assembly line. His notorious campaigning as a conspiracy mongering Jew-hater is pooh-poohed as one of his many eccentricities. There are some decent performers among the supporting cast, including R.H. Thomson as Ford's only son, the steady and practical, Edsel, and Michael Ironside as Henry Ford's attack dog, Harry Bennett. The directing is atrocious.
A very good, well made, made for TV biopic about Henry Ford, the founder of the Ford Motor Company, The Man and the Machine has a good cast of actors and a good script for them to work with. I thought that despite its shortcomings, the film had some strong enough performances from its cast to make it work. Although long, The Man and the Machine is a very good film that tells an interesting story. The Henry Ford story is one of innovation and bringing a new concept in assembling things on a mass scale, and the film tackles that very well. Although having a small budget, this is a very well done low budget feature.
