You wouldn’t think a man who directed Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner, Judgement at Nuremberg, Inherent Wind, and The Defiant Oneswould direct a comedy that involved an all-star cast (Spencer Tracy, Milton Berle, Sid Caeser, Buddy Hackett, Ethel Merman, Mickey Rooney, and even a young Jonathan Winters) in a race for a bag of cash from Palm Desert, CA to the Mexican Border. Stanley Kramer’s first delve into comedy, and it paid off handsomely; a 1963 box office smash and critical darling that was also nominated for six Academy Awards. It’s a comedy that still holds up, even nearly 60 years later, and that even inspired a guilty pleasure of mine, the 2002 comedy Rat Race.
