I have always been fascinated by the work of Paul Thomas Anderson. His collaboration with Jonny Greenwood has been one of the most iconic in contemporary cinema. Junun is a film about people from different cultures, speaking different languages, and yet, all united by the language of music.
It's been oddly satisfying seeing Anderson shoot on digital. His editing and amaturish approach to the camera creates an incredibly relatable environment. You can feel yourself inside the palace, with all the musicians, the mics, and the pigeons. Junun is a home video, a travel vlog, and it is deeply personal. Non fiction storytelling has a lot of potential, it just has to be discovered, and Junun is certainly one that brings a lot of good out from it. It's never about the gear, one should follow his impulse and create.
