real bad but i kinda miss the blip from like '97 til obama when horror overshot daniel laverys concept of "camp heterosexuality" (fred olen ray, reanimator, evil dead) into homoerotic "bro camp" (idle hands, bordello of blood, aintit-cool miramax shit like sin city/dusk til dawn, basically everything full moon was doing) tho it lives on thru sov guys who havent been totally a24'd or sharknadoed
The misadventures of two lovable thieves tasked with stealing a stone with the power to raise the dead while dodging the omnipresent leader of a druid-like cult who control the relic.
Remember enjoying this buddy comedy in a light horror vinaigrette more the first time around a few years back. Without much connective tissue between sequences like driving scenes, they feel disembodied from each another throughout the longish runtime. This paired with thick writing muddle the cult's lore and lighthearted fun that would fit well on an episode of USA Up All Night.
Which actually sucks to say since Soulkeeper is nothing but well-intentioned. Despite an absence of blood and guts, it's obvious writer/director Darin Ferriola is a genre fan…
this movie broke my fucking VCR. the tape head got so dirty just from rewinding this piece of shit tape with its stupid ass lenticular cover that it won't play anything anymore. now I have to shell out $14 for a tape head cleaner because q-tips and alcohol aren't going to work in this player. fuck you, Soulkeeper.
Really entertaining film about two doofus thieves who wind up having to save the world from EVIL! This really seems like a predecessor to the many Title Character vs Evil horror/comedies that came out shortly after this, but not Ash. He's still the number one doofus.
The two leads are charismatic, there's lots of chuckles, some funny fourth wall breaking moments, a great supporting cast and some good setpieces. Easily one of the better DTV films of the era, though it feels like a TV movie in many instances. Except for all the boobies.
I was always surprised that this didn't get at least a tiny cult following. It's really fun and imaginative and embraces it's B-Movie trappings.
An absolute delight from start to finish. Just so much fun and sports a great sense of humor. For fans of Dead Heat, Night of the Creeps, and The Mummy. Ambitious, low-budget, kitchen sink genre fare - a boner comedy-horror, sci-if/fantasy, swashbuckling action-adventure ripe for cult audiences looking for a new fix
Needs a blu pronto
A SciFi channel original that also happens to be one of my favorite movies, and it’s absolutely ridiculous that this hasn’t been rediscovered.
Far and above anything else with “ScFi Channel Original” attached to it (unless you count Dog Soldiers, but still) in terms of actual production. I’ve always called it “The best 80’s movie not made in the 80’s” and I still maintain that. In a perfect world, this would have been a franchise of films, or at the very least been followed by a tv series.
I constantly hope some boutique label will give this a fully stacked bluray at some point, but I’m not sure how realistic that is.
Anyway, maybe 5 stars is a lil high…
Synopsis: Acquisition specialists (AKA Tomb Raiders) and all-around scamps Terrence and Corey have been contacted by a rich benefactor to retrieve the Rock of Lazarus, an ancient relic capable of returning souls back to Earth. That all seems fine and dandy until they come across sorcerer Simon Mangus, who can turn people into mindless zombie types, and some demons.
Review: The charismatic leads, especially Rodney Rowland, really carried this movie and it was accented nicely by vets Brad Dourif, Karen Black and Robert Davi. The effects looked pretty good for the most part with a nice-looking demon that was practical and rubbery. Soulkeeper is a fun romp that fills 105 minutes nicely.
Carnage Count 2/5

Two goofs steal historical objects for the voice of Robert Davi, up to & including Abe Lincoln’s hat. Then Brad Dourif, with a labored French accent, hires them to steal a magic rock from a reincarnated Magus. They ask people if they believe in the human soul a lot. If it weren’t for the boobs & dick jokes, I would’ve pegged this picture for a covert Christian action flick. But it doesn’t really have a message that coherent. Highly episodic with Tiny Lister as a computer researcher, an earthy goth hangout with lesbian nudity, neurotic visions of mom, tech gear, Tiny Lister as a robed disciple, a NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD tribute, two different monsters, FX by K.N.B., William Bassett (RETURN…
A horror comedy about two guys looking for a cursed/holy object. One is a generic bland hero and the other a Dexter-lookalike.
A few jokes worked in a Beavis and Butthead-way and it was nice to see small roles for Robert Davi, Brad Dourif and... holy shit, it's Zeus.
Not overall entertaining because it was not over the top funny and too often more of a generic screwball sex comedy.
Fun movie for what it was (in other words... it could have sucked a lot more than it did since it was a Syfy original film)
Hooptober 7.0 Challenge: Bonus viewing
Not even the presence of Karen Black and Brad Dourif could salvage this hokey horror-comedy. It did make me chuckle a couple of times, but it made me groan far more often.
