Although without adding a substantially memorable story, The convent will sure please those who enjoy sinister medieval tales. With its atmospheric and bleak cinematography, cruel imagery and delightfully over the top and deranged plotting as malevolent as those evil nuns, it sure will tempt those who love some bloody supernatural mayhem. Though, it's not at all without its flaws. Quite a few characters are underused and the climax could have been pushed into something far more maniacal and unhinged. Though, it's still reaching some demented heights on its way towards the still tension-filled climax due to the cruel nature of the abbess and her servants, and also that of the supernatural proceedings, all of which never bore and never stop shedding some red fluids on their hellish way towards damnation.
Slightly dodgy dialogue, tonally haphazard and schlocky elements galore, but for what it's worth I still think this was a fun little nunsploitation flick. The copious amount of shoddy cgi and slatherings of blood makes the final portion feel like a virtual reality game in a ramshackle arcade (okay, I'm being a bit too harsh there). But despite its overall awkwardness, the film still manages to be pretty mean spirited, what with all the recurring eye gouging and nun casualties. The Convent (The Heretik) takes its time to unravel, but eventually explodes into all its sacrilegious ludicrousy and depending on your taste level, you may roll your eyes derisively or laugh unironically.
It’s a shame I can’t be more enthusiastic about Paul Hyett’s new project. Hyett is very much a director I admire, THE SEASONING HOUSE and HOWL were both completely different yet equally compelling interesting stories and unfortunately, I did not get that with HERETIKS. Now maybe this is partly my tastes fault, I struggle with period pieces from centuries gone by, I adore ‘Inside Number 9’ but detest the episode that is set in a similar timeframe and I did not get the same ‘Wow!’ factor most other horror fans got with THE WITCH so I would certainly be interested in reading views from people who are more into this timeframe in their genre films.
The premise is on the…
can’t believe i’m failing my a levels because i went to the cinema and watched this ‘film’
As I started to watch "The Convent", I initially thought: oh here we go again, a period piece (I tend to hate those) and probably another really bad religious Horror movie. And not even ten minutes in, I loved every minute of it. My eyes were glued to the screen. The atmosphere totally carried me away. The acting was phenomenal, the direction by Paul Hyett as well. The score was on point, the costumes looked good. But most important were the effects to me. Sure, there was obviously CGI involved and to some of you this might just look silly. But I totally dug that look. The glowing eyes made this so cool, that I really can't say anything bad…
Paul Hyett is a director I actually quite like Howl was a fun movie and The Seasoning House was actually pretty solid. This movie however wasn’t that great, sure it does have some decent direction and the acting is fine enough, but it honestly just feels like another cliched horror movie that really doesn’t anything special going for it. The pacing is also very inconsistent at times it will feel really well paced and then all of a sudden it just suddenly stops, it becomes very uninteresting which is quite disappointing. If you have seen any horror movie in your life you have already seen this movie, it’s not a terrible movie but it’s something I just wouldn’t recommend.

Paul Hyett’s British horror in which a young girl is saved from execution and taken to a small retreat. But she’s not safe, and an unthinkable evil lies ahead. Starring Hannah Arterton and Clare Higgins.
In the beginning of the 17th century, blameless young Persephone (Hannah Arterton) is wrongly suspected and put on trial for her life. Her fate appears to be sealed except for the appropriate involvement of the secretive Reverend Mother (Clare Higgins) presenting her not just preserve, but optimism.
The Reverend Mother is in charge of a tiny religious evacuation where her corresponding Sisters search for amends for their histories. But upon entrance, Persephone is inundated with visions and it isn’t long before she comprehends that it’s…
THE CONVENT was not for me. Some decent production design and great cinematography though. Crazy that this thing had a 2.5 million budget…
This is one of those films that really, I think, exemplifies the differences between mainstream horror audiences......and me. I think it's really humorous that there are so many accolades for Paul Hyett's "Howl" and "The Seasoning House", yet when it comes to this, the ratings are so low. That's amusing to me.
"Howl" was pretty middle of the road, it offered nothing new, nothing fresh, same tired stereotypes. It's.....okay. "The Seasoning House" is your run of the mill exploitation/torture porn film revolving around revenge. Neither are particularly fantastic, and I haven't even bothered to rate the latter of the two.
So, with this one, I went in with low expectations like I do with everything I watch on Tubi. And,…
This British period piece horror feature from director/co-writer Paul Hyett(HOWL,THE SEASONING HOUSE) has a young heretic(Hannah Arterton[WALKING ON SUNSHINE,OLD BEGINNINGS]) who is saved by a reverend mother nun(Clare Higgins[HELLRAISER,REDY PLAYER ONE]) who takes her to live in their convent, where Arterton and the other young nuns have to live under super strict rules while they slowly discover that sinister Hellspawn forces are at hand to come and consume their very souls.
Originally filmed as HERETICS,THE CONVENT starts out slow in its first 30 minutes before transforming into a major gorefest once the bodily possessions take place as everyone finds themselves in danger with demonic bodily possessions and splat happy violence against eyeballs, face, heads, and throats aplenty amid the cast's strong performances and Hyett…
