Downfall ★★★★½

It is important to understand that historical villains aren’t other worldly monsters or demons, but that they were (and are) people. Really awful people with really awful ideologies that did really really awful things. Hateful. Delusional. Cowardly. But, people none the less.

Downfall brilliantly displays a critical moment in history and it’s cast conveys that the men and women of the Third Reich were just people saying and doing and believing fucking heinous. This doesn’t make them any less terrifying - it makes them more so.

Bruno Ganz’s Hitler is the centerpiece and deserves the acclaim it has received, but Ulrich Matthes’s black-eyed Goebbels, along with his pearl wearing wife played by Corinna Harfouch, will give you nightmares.
