    Oh Mercy

Did I like this movie? I'm still not sure. This detective procedural, centered around Captain Daoud who has the air of having seen it all before, unfolds slowly and doubles back on itself numerous times. I loved the performances from Léa Mysius and Sara Forestier, as murder suspects Claude and Marie, but if I had to watch them mumble through another interrogation scene I might have walked out of Walter Reade Theater. It's not their fault. The script, written by Arnaud Desplechin (Dir.) and Mysius, didn't give the women that much to do. Not sure what this added to the genre.

    The Wild Goose Lake

Diao Yinan constructs an intricate underground universe around motor bike thieves jockeying for money and power in this Chinese noir flick. When high ranking member Zhou Zenong accidentally kills a cop one night, it sets off a fugitive chase across southeast China for Zenong, who finds brief refuge at Wild Goose Lake, a lawless region known for its sex workers. Insane action sequences are used sparingly and to great affect. Really loved this one

Booksmart is a sensitive movie that is really smart about relationships between girls. I heard the hype, and I had faith in Olivia Wilde as someone who had been in tv spots (circa early 2000s) about high school to capture what's special about the genre. She definitely pulls it off, but I had a real desire for more world building around the characters, their families, the high school, etc. But I'm excited to see what she does next.
