    it’s been a long time since a film has felt so deeply affectionate to me. this is a homage to nature, both human and external, which is so genuinely moving, so grippingly honest, that i cried multiple times - and never tired of the ‘off the grid living’ subject because, for once, such a subject refused…

    an interesting portrayal of faith and all its fluctuations which, unfortunately, falters at the finale. 

    ethan hawke gives a deeply sensitive and poignant performance as reverend ernst toller. his world-weary sensibilities and affection for thomas merton are a little too heavy-handed for me to love this as much as i wanted to. still, faith is a difficult thing to hold onto and i at least appreciate some sort of honest testament to that internal struggle. even if this was a strange one.

    nat and alex wolff fight over a girl, alex calls nat a “white motherfucker”, alex exposes himself on the street, alex says “et tu floor?” to the floor, alex puts on this helium voice v sporadically but also a lot, and their dog dies, and the whole thing is directed by their mum. 


    this is not a good movie but also, it is a good movie. no further questions

    an interesting attempt at understanding what it means to be a family and the many ways love manifests beyond blood ties. well-shot, well-cast. unnecessarily gutting. i am too sensitive for such a deeply unsatisfying ending.
