A simple and straightforward film about two women falling in love. It’s so wonderfully filmed and performed that every banal moment becomes undeniably compelling and cinematic.
No director embodies the films as dreams trope as well as Fellini. 8 1/2 is the ultimate evidence of that. This film creates a narrative in which dreams and reality exist side-by-side, each informed by the other. Images abound with eroticism and tropes of sadism and masochism. Though I personally find La Dolce Vita to be more entertaining, it's undeniable that 8 1/2'a visuals are the strongest of Fellini's black & white period.
