  • Another Earth

    Another Earth

While it never fully goes as far with its high-concept sci-fi premise as it could have, Another Earth uses its premise of a duplicate Earth hovering above ours as a method of exploring the possibilities of our alternate selves with the promises of atoning for past mistakes and a chance to reclaim a life that is now lost to us. It also manages to craft an effectively solemn atmosphere despite amateurish production values. -Mike

  • Tower

Definitely an entertaining way to do this, but I don't know how I feel about the actors relaying the commentary of the witnesses. If it's to communicate the testimonies of the deceased then where's one from Rita? Was there one from Rita? That's the other thing, there may be too many commentaries to keep track of if you're trying to create an engrossing narrative. Still, the story is a legendary one as the lynchpin of American mass shootings, and the animation is well done.-Jack

A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night

Would make a great double feature with another former Random Movie Roulette film, The Addiction. Both films are gorgeous black-and-white realistic interpretations of vampires in contemporary settings. A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night is a stark, cold mood-piece that lulls you into its eerie atmosphere, which simultaneously allows you to sympathize with the sullen, predatory Girl, while at the same time being afraid of her. A worthy watch for anyone willing to venture into subsections of arthouse horror. -Mike

  • The Fly

    The Fly

Generally considered to be the golden standard for body horror, David Cronenberg's The Fly is an example of a remake that has become more essential and iconic than its original. A pioneer in some of the all time best practical makeup effects in film history, The Fly explores both the physical and mental transformation of man into creature. -Mike
