I'm not exactly sure what happened in the story nor why, but I thoroughly enjoyed Lost Highway from start to end! It's visually engaging with some great cinematography, editing and weird effects. The music is also fantastic, making each segment with it very enjoyable and setting the mood perfectly. Good film overall, with a very fun idea for an assassination. Unfortunately there were just too many things that annoyed me throughout, like the singing and having things constantly get in their way. It almost got ridiculous at times in how everything is working against them that it became banal, so it was difficult to just enjoy it and I was frustrated at some points instead. Many of the characters were also not especially likeable or charming, aside from James Stewart of course. Still, for the most part I did enjoy it.
I don't know what to make of this one. On one hand, the cautionary tale aspect is quite brilliant. On the other, it's an extremely unsatisfying story which has made me question what the point of a film even is. I guess I should praise it for engaging me enough that I'm actually getting upset, confused and self-reflective but until I find what exactly I like and dislike about this I don't know how to even rate it.
God, I love this movie. There are so many memorable lines, funny interactions and regardless of how Ed actually turned out it's still inspiring. The actors chosen for the parts were all perfect, Depp's performance and demeanor works great for the character he's playing and I love the tone of it all.
