    Beautifully made, surprisingly gory, surprisingly funny, but I think there's less here than meets the eye.
    Pugh is fantastic and holds the whole thing together, and Aster shows great control over the visuals. But what's it really about? Is it just an attempt to freak the audience out, without actually saying anything? If so then it really didn't need to be 140 minutes long.

    Some Like It Hot


    First saw this on TV a long time ago, but this viewing was of the 4k remaster in a local cinema with my 9yo.
    I had to explain to him what Prohibition was, but apart from that he was fine. I think it's a shade too long for a comedy, but it still works thanks to the charm of its stars and the quality of the script. There's also some sly sexual innuendo and some geeky gangster movie references.

    It's ironic that a film which keeps telling us that its protagonist is abnormal and thinks differently has such a conventional screenplay. Everything is signposted and underlined in clumsy, explanatory dialogue. I think Cumberbatch was miscast and he gives a fussy, twitchy performance which is easily outclassed by the very impressive young actor who plays Turing in the flashbacks to his school days.

    Certainly knows how to create an atmosphere of dread and filth and misery. Also clever in the way it withholds information and resists the temptation to over-explain.
    But it's also a bit thin and repetitive, and would probably have worked better as a short.
