    Godzilla: King of the Monsters

    ★★★½

The number one thing holding the Godzilla franchise back in America is that we expect certain pretenses to the movies we watch. You can't be silly without being self-aware, you can't be serious without signaling that you should be taken seriously, and if you try pull a Hideo Kojima and do both at the same time, you're likely to trigger a massive dissonance with the audience.

The self-conscious attitude we Burgermen brought to the table tore apart our first effort…

    Iron Man 2

Back in 2005 Marvel published 'Extremis', a reboot/retcon that updated Iron Man's backstory for the modern era. The story is almost entirely composed of Tony Stark introspectively brooding in a coma while the story's villain, a random redneck with almost no characterization, marches singlemindedly across the country to kill the president. This aggressively boring story was beloved at the time and is now considered one of the best Iron Man stories of all time.

Why is it so well regarded?…

Somehow, miraculously, we've gotten another MCU movie with Iron Man 2's action-light dialogue focus, only instead of being a metaphor for America's crisis of faith, it's a fairly shallow movie that leans on your nostalgia for past films. Not to dog on the movie too hard, though; Tony Stark receives a genuinely heartfelt arc that makes him feel like a real character for the first time since his second movie, and the Russos are at least competent enough to make its 3 hour runtime feel like 2.
