Once Upon a Time in Hollywood

The first 2/3s whilst slow are a satisfying exploration of 60s Hollywood. All the little references and elaborate outdoor sets (which you get to see a lot of in the hours of driving sequences l) fully immerse you in (Tarantino’s rose tinted but fun vision of) a bygone era. Pitt and DiCaprio need more time together on screen, but both (particularly Pitt) offer outstanding performances. Whilst at first I felt tested by the mundane and (deliberately) meandering first 2 hours, the tension this helps to establishes makes the subversion in the final 45 minutes true Tarantino perfection. Very very sexist tho.

The greatest achievement of the film is its immersive atomosphere. You feel each hit whether it be orgasmic or nearly lethal, you feel complicit and guilty in Tommy’s fate and most of all you feel conflicted over Renton’s betrayal. The friendships that form the narrative, much like the skag, are addictive and dangerous but familiar. Boyle and his actors are working at the heights of their powers, and somehow manage to make the aesthetic and lifestyle of the gear heads look cool and exciting as well as terrifyingly undesirable. Prime British Kino.

True horror. An absolutel masterpiece of intense and serious television that shook me to my core. Properly existentially terrifying with some great performances and poignant message favouring individual human efforts over that of the state.
