Devon Graham’s review published on Letterboxd:
The Iron Giant grabbed me right from the start by simply flowing so well through the elements:
The writing was charming, funny, kid and adult friendly, and natural. Along with how the actor's voices fit so well with their characters, the writing was able to evoke enough emotion to make this an experience rather than just another film.
There were plenty of characters used but none were over used, and every character served their purpose perfectly to further the story.
This film brings out our emotions with the simple theme of unconditional love between Hogarth and The Iron Giant. It breathes life and death and is always hopeful for humankind.
One theme in this film that made me oh so happy was that of existentialism:
"Look, it's none of my business, but who cares what these creeps think of you? They don't make you what you are, you do. You are who you choose to be."
-Dean
"It's bad to kill. Guns kill. And you don't have to be a gun. You are what you choose to be. You choose. Choose."
-Hogarth
(In the Giant's mind) "You are who you choose to be."
"Superman."
-The Iron Giant
Other than Brad Bird's first film, The Iron Giant, he has created a couple other amazing films such as Ratatouille and The Incredibles which I can say are up there in my favourites list. (Very glad he now works for Pixar).
Ugh I love this movie so much. Teared up a tiny bit at the end <3
