The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift

    ★★½

    68% - Favorable

Definitely the most forgettable of the franchise. A great deal has to do with the fact that it has a cast of completely new characters and in that sense it feels more like a spinoff. The races do look a lot better here though and the Tokyo setting makes for some pretty cool visuals. I liked the introduction of Han and that final character reveal was pretty amazing. Even though it’s my least favorite of the franchise, I still had a decently good time overall.

    71% - Pretty Good

I love that this didn’t even try to be serious and doubled down on the ridiculous fun that would come to define this franchise. The colorful cars and music brought back so many memories and Ludacris and Tyrese added a lot of humor and personality. I was bummed that Diesel didn’t show up though. The villain is quite good and you can’t go wrong with Eva Mendez. Overall, I found this to be just about as good as the first; nostalgia has a lot to do with it but I just had a lot of fun with this one.

After a second viewing and researching different theories for a couple of days, I realized there's so much more to this film than I initially thought. The surface level explanation of what literally happens is pretty straightforward, but there are themes and allegory that Peele has embedded in the film that require a bit more digging into. I’ve taken the ideas that stood out to me the most and compiled an interpretation that I think is closest to…

Pretty much a shot for shot remake of the original. The visuals are stunningly realistic and that may be enough of a draw for those who are looking for a nostalgic trip with no surprises. The voice cast is mostly good and I thought Billy Eichner and Seth Rogen stole the show as Timon and Pumba. Hearing Pumba with a Seth Rogen laugh is something I never knew I needed and I liked…
